Хлопок – растение, из волокон которого производят одноименный материал, славящийся своей универсальностью. Из него делают рубашки, джинсы, нижнее белье, носки, легкие костюмы и пуловеры, и многое другое. Даже натуральная шерсть пасует перед хлопком в этом вопросе.
Уже 5 тысяч лет назад хлопок был известен в Индии, но только в начале 18 века прогресс позволил начать его крупномасштабную переработку на прядильных фабриках и вывел Великобританию и Швейцарию на лидирующие позиции в поставках этого натурального материала на мировые рынки.
Созревая в коробочке, величиной с небольшой абрикос, хлопок-сырец расцветает в белое облачко, превращая хлопковые поля в мягкие невесомые равнины. В южных штатах США этот момент становился началом этапа тяжелого изнурительного труда для рабов. Сейчас хлопок собирают и обрабатывают машины, но основным мировым поставщиком хлопка по-прежнему остается Юг США. Именно отсюда приходит «Си Айленд Коттон» – самый дорогой хлопок, отличающийся особой тонкостью и шелковистостью, делающими его похожим на шелк. В переплетениях этого хлопка почти в полтора раза больше нитей на дюйм, чем в поплине, что обеспечивает более сложную фактуру «Си Айленд» и большую глубину цвета. Этот хлопок идеально подходит для сложного рисунка.
Длина волокна созревшего хлопка определяет его качество. Более того, именно по этому фактору происходит первичное деление: на длинноволокнистый и коротковолокнистый хлопок. Также важны: тонкость волокон, их сила, мягкость, блеск и цвет. Самый ценный хлопок бесцветен и блеск его серебрист.
Хлопок мягок и комфортен, он дает большое разнообразие видов тканей, как чистых, так и смесовых. Он может быть теплым, может дарить прохладу. Он может стоить дорого, как «Си Айленд Коттон» или египетский «Мако», он же может быть демократичным по цене, как джинсовая ткань. Если бы не некоторая сминаемость — хлопок был бы идеальным материалом.
